Extender chain

An extender chain is a short section of chain, usually two to three inches, attached at one end of a clasp. Extra jump rings spaced along its length give a few different places to attach the opposite end, so the same piece of jewelry can be worn slightly looser or tighter.

It is especially useful on gift pieces where the exact wrist or neck size is not known, or on pieces meant to layer over different necklines, since one length can then fit a small range of sizes instead of just one.

When buying or adding one, match the chain style and metal finish to the rest of the piece so it reads as an intentional design detail rather than an obvious add-on. A common mistake is attaching the extender so it ends up prominently at the front of the neck instead of at the back near the clasp, where it is far less noticeable.
