Bead mat

A bead mat is a thin, cushioned pad, usually made of a fuzzy fabric like felt or velvet-textured foam, that beaders work on top of. The slightly grippy surface keeps beads from rolling off the table or bouncing away when one is dropped, and it cushions delicate beads against chips if they fall a short distance.

Color matters more than it might seem: a mat in a neutral gray or beige makes it easy to see beads of almost any color clearly, while a very dark or very light mat can hide beads of a similar shade and make sorting harder. Size matters too, a mat should be large enough to hold a project's beads plus tools without feeling cramped.

A common mistake is working directly on a bare table or a slick cutting mat, since beads roll and scatter far more easily on hard, smooth surfaces. Another is choosing a mat color that closely matches the beads being used for a specific project, which slows down sorting and picking up stray beads.
