Wirework is the branch of jewelry making where wire itself becomes the structure, forming loops, links, frames, and decorative elements. It opens up designs that stringing alone cannot achieve: dangling earrings, rosary-style chains, briolette pendants, and connected bracelets. The barrier to entry is lower than it looks. With three pliers, a cutter, and a spool of practice wire, you can learn the two loops that underpin nearly everything else, and most of the learning is muscle memory that arrives faster than expected.

Understand wire before bending it. Jewelry wire is sized by gauge, and like seed beads the number runs backward: higher gauge means thinner wire. The workhorse sizes are 20 gauge for sturdy links and ear wires, 22 gauge as a versatile middle ground, 24 gauge for wrapping and most gemstone holes, and 26 to 28 gauge for delicate weaving. Wire also comes in tempers: dead soft bends easily and suits wrapping, half hard holds shapes and suits structural loops. Material matters for both budget and skin: copper and colored craft wire are perfect for practice, while sterling silver, gold-filled, and stainless steel serve finished pieces. Buy a big cheap spool of 20 or 22 gauge copper and treat it as your classroom.

The tool trio is simple. Round nose pliers have conical jaws for forming loops; where you grip along the cone determines loop size, so many makers mark a spot on the jaw with a marker for consistency. Chain nose pliers have flat, smooth jaws for gripping, angling, and tucking ends. Flush cutters trim wire leaving one flat face, and you should always point the flat side toward the work so no sharp spur remains. Add nylon jaw pliers later for straightening bent wire without marring it. Quality matters most in the cutters, since crushed, ragged ends sabotage otherwise clean work.

The simple loop is skill number one. Trim your wire to leave about 10mm above the bead, bend that stem 90 degrees flush against the bead, grip the tip with round nose pliers, and roll the wire back over the top until the end meets the bend, forming a closed circle centered above the bead like a lollipop. The classic beginner error is a loop that sits off to one side; the initial right-angle bend is what prevents it. Simple loops open and close like jump rings, twisting sideways rather than pulling apart, which makes them convenient for earrings and easily adjusted designs.

The wrapped loop is skill number two and the mark of durable work. Leave a longer tail, make the same right-angle bend but a few millimeters above the bead, form a loop around the round nose jaw, then wrap the tail around the stem two or three times, filling the gap down to the bead, and trim and tuck the end. A wrapped loop cannot be pulled open, which makes it the correct choice for anything load-bearing: pendant bails, bracelet links, and heavy dangles. It takes perhaps five times longer than a simple loop at first and twice as long forever, and the security is worth it. Practice both loops in runs of twenty on copper wire and compare your first to your last; the improvement curve is steep and motivating.

With the two loops mastered, projects assemble themselves. A pair of earrings is two beads with loops hung on purchased ear wires. A link bracelet is a row of beaded loops connected loop-to-loop, finished with a clasp. A briolette pendant uses a variation where the wire passes through a top-drilled stone and wraps above its point. From there you can explore spirals, hammered shapes, and woven wire at your own pace. Keep your practice pieces in a jar; six months in, that jar becomes the most convincing record of progress a beginner could ask for.
